A Cambodian lady has discovered success by promoting Thai-style stir-fried ice cream in her country. The lady, Ouk Chanvoleak, realized how to make the dessert in Thailand before opening her enterprise on Pub Street in Siem Reap in 2014.
The avenue food, also known as rolled ice cream, grew popular in Thailand around 2012.
However, starting the enterprise was not simple for Ouk. Ensured needed to spend US$4,000 to buy the required machine to make the stir-fried ice cream. Initially, she didn’t have a spot to function from and would move round with a cart linked to a motorcycle. Now, she operates from a small stall next to a busy thoroughfare close to Pub Street.
Ouk has become identified for her agility in frying ice cream on a metal plate, in addition to the colorful hues of the ice cream produced from fruits. Passers-by usually cease to observe her make the dessert and check out it for themselves.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Ouk may earn between 200,000 (1,700 baht) to 600,000 riel per night time (5,one hundred fifty baht), she informed Phnom Penh Post. But for the rationale that pandemic hit, the most she can earn is around 200,000 riel.
Ouk’s enterprise has been an important supply of income to help her household, particularly her two kids. Ouk mentioned the profits from her business are about 40% after deducting bills, which is sufficient to assist her children’s training.
Ouk operates the business from 3pm until midnight or later, as Pub Street is often busiest late at night and into the early morning.
However, Ouk faces the same problem as many other enterprise owners in Siem Reap – her business relies upon heavily on vacationers. When there aren’t any tourists, she makes little money. Despite the challenges, Ouk is hopeful that vacationer numbers will rebound next high season and plans to expand her enterprise to more locations as her youngsters grow older.
